DBT Star College Scheme 2019-22
The Dept. of Biotechnology (DBT) has launched a scheme "Star College Scheme for Strengthening of Science Education and Training at Undergraduate Level" for improving critical thinking and 'hands-on' experimental work at the undergraduate (college) level in sciences. It is expected to encourage, more students to take up higher education in science. DBT will identify colleges with ambition and potential for excellence and provide academic and physical infrastructure for achieving excellence in teaching and unique exposure of students to experimental science.
The Star College Scheme is a pan-India Scheme that envisages a Star College in every district of the country, thus the Department shall exert dialogues with the State Government and identify colleges that can be considered for support under this Scheme. Apart from financial support, colleges benefit tremendously from guidance received in Advisory Committee Meetings, mentoring, Task Force Meetings, and learning from peers in other colleges.
Our college was nominated with this scheme in 2019-20. Total 63 lakhs rupees were sanctioned by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, Ministry of Science and Technology for strengthening the Science education and training at undergraduate level. Three departments from science faculty were selected by DBT for this scheme. These departments were, Botany, Chemistry, and Physics.
Objectives:
· To strengthen the academic and physical infrastructure for achieving excellence in teaching and training.
· To enhance the quality of the learning and teaching process to stimulate original thinking through ’hands-on' exposure to experimental work and participation in summer schools.
· To promote networking and strengthen ties with neighboring institutions and other laboratories.
· To conduct specialized training programmes for faculty improvement for optimizing technical capabilities.
· To increase capabilities of core instrumentation resources by procuring new equipment and upgrading of existing facilities.
· To provide access and exposure to students to research laboratories and industries in the country.
· To help in devising standard curricula and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) / kits for practicals.
· To provide better library facility to students and teachers.

Introduction:
Department of Biotechnology Government of India, Ministry of Science and Technology has funded ‘DBT STAR COLLEGE’ Scheme to our college to brand and nurture excellence in UG Science education. The program emphasizes holistic improvement of science education at undergraduate level with special emphasis on practical training to students. The initiative provides support for (a) Access to specialized infrastructure to students, (b) Improving knowledge and skills of teachers in basic Sciences and specialized techniques, (c) Assurance of consumables, reagents and chemicals for students, (d) Substantial hands-on experience in designing and conducting practicals to ensure critical thinking, (e) Access to books and journals including e-journal facilities. Aim of this scheme is to improve practical training in existing Science courses like Botany, Chemistry and Physics, It clearly highlight additional practical’s (as per prescribed curriculum, which could not be done due to lack of equipments or consumables) proposed to be conducted in existing courses by all participating departments, student projects (interdisciplinary/interdepartmental), visits to be undertaken by students to National Laboratories and industries and faculty improvement programs. It also focuses on the orientation of Faculty teaching undergraduate science students by conducting orientation programmes in different subjects. This scheme also includes extension and outreach programmes which are helpful to reach society and to study their grass root problems to find out the solutions.
